Town Council

Your Voice Matters

The Orono Town Council has adopted a service promise and set priorities for itself to establish direction and build a stronger culture of citizen engagement and trust. These priorities will help make sure your voice matters in Orono.

Bringing Ideas to Life

Residents, neighborhoods, and community organizations know best what makes Orono a great place to live. We will commit shared resources to support citizen-led initiatives and launch new ideas that bring Orono together.

Listening to Everyone

We make decisions together in Orono. Everyone who wants to be heard must have a fair chance to participate in a clearly articulated process that includes timely updates to stakeholders. We will create personal connections through events and experiences, survey residents to collect comprehensive feedback, and promote Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging in Orono.

Making Engagement Easy

The Council relies on the expertise of professional staff to deliver services and navigate complexity while striving to make citizenship as simple as possible. We will work with staff to simplify processes where we can and to produce easy-to-find video tutorials or one-page summaries that make Orono’s policies and procedures easy to understand.

Stewarding Our Resources

Orono’s tax dollars fund our priorities and compensate hardworking, essential employees who educate, protect, and serve us all. We maintain accountability and set priorities for our limited resources through an open budget process and the best available data, trends, and projections. Residents are invited to help the Council ask questions and understand how spending decisions create opportunities and impact the tax burden. We all must act as stewards of our environment. Members of our community are leaders and experts in the work of preservation, sustainability, and access who can help shape decisions about on-going operations and the future of Orono.

About the Council

The Town Council is the governing body of the Town and consists of seven council members who are elected at-large. By Charter, the Council selects a Chairperson from among its members following each election. Members of the Council serve for three-year terms and are responsible for providing policy direction to the Town Manager.

The election for Council members is held once a year on the 2nd Tuesday in March. Nomination papers are available in the Town Clerk's Office beginning mid-December.
