The outdoors is available to everyone the way it should be -- free and any time you want. The Town and University of Maine have an extensive network of interconnecting trails for walking, biking, and skiing. For trail maps, check the Orono Land Trust and University of Maine websites. Canoeing and kayaking are available at your front door, on the Stillwater River and on Pushaw Lake, with several launch sites. The Stillwater sports area small-mouth bass fishing. Orono is part of the Greater Bangor gateway both to Maine's North Woods for snowmobiling, hunting, and wildlife watching, and to Downeast Maine, including Acadia National Park just an hour away.
Almost any night you will find performances at The University's Collins Center for the Arts, or a sporting event at the Alfond Arena, Mahaney Diamond, or Memorial Gym. The Orono Public Library also boasts many events through out the year. Every season brings a community fair to Orono's walkable downtown. Food and drinks are served by one of the best clusters of restaurants and pubs in the region.
Knowledge workers, from recent graduates to technicians to senior citizens, want to live and work where they can earn an advanced degree, take an additional course, or just tune up their learning. The University of Maine is here for degrees, but also for continuous learning through its Division of Lifelong Learning, distance education programs and the Eastern Maine Community College, Husson University, and the New England School of Communications are minutes away in Bangor.
From Trunk or Treat, The Thanksgiving Community Dinner, Events at the Public Library, and the Street and Stream Clean Up, Orono is a tight knit and welcoming community with plenty of events to participate in regardless of the season!
