Tuesday Readers discuss "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain

Tuesday, September 19, 2023

It's time for another season of the Tuesday Readers Book Group!

Tuesday Readers meetings are held in person, typically on the third Tuesday of the month, at 11:00am.  Please bring your lunch or a refreshment to share (not necessary!).

If you are unable to participate in person, you may contact us a day in advance and we will set up our Meeting Owl to allow you to Zoom from home.  If you would like to be added to our contact list, please email library@orono.org. Everyone and anyone is welcome to join us for one or several of our meetings, with no commitment, for friendly conversations designed to stir the mind.

Whether Twain's writings make you chuckle or widen your eyes, you are all invited to join us for a discussion of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, written in 1884, which explores a variety of themes and takes us on a raucous journey down the Mississippi River.

A bit more about the story: Fresh from his escapades with Tom Sawyer, with six thousand dollars in the bank, Huck Finn faces a new challenge: his father, Pap, who wants Huck's fortune and will stop at nothing to get his hands on it. Escaping from Pap, Huck meets Miss Watson's slave, Jim, who has run away after learning that Miss Watson may sell him. Jim plans to head north, find work, and buy his wife and children out of slavery. Huck joins him on a salvaged raft, beginning a raucous journey that transforms into a deep reckoning with human frailty and the hypocrisy of the antebellum South.
